Key January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

The start of a new year brings crucial tax-related dates. January 2026 is particularly significant for individual taxpayers with deadlines for estimated tax payments, tip reporting, and strategic tax planning. It's essential to familiarize yourself with these dates to stay compliant and make informed financial decisions.

January 2 - Schedule Your Tax Appointment

The new year marks the beginning of tax season. We advise scheduling your tax preparation appointment as soon as possible to ensure ample time for comprehensive tax planning, especially for high-net-worth individuals with complex financial portfolios.

January 12 - Tip Income Reporting

Employees receiving tips must report any tips exceeding $20 earned in December to their employer no later than January 12. Utilize IRS Form 4070 or a personal statement, ensuring it includes your signature, name, address, Social Security number, your employer's name, and total tips received during the reporting period. Accurate reporting ensures that FICA taxes and income tax withholdings are correctly processed. If regular wages are insufficient, the uncollected amounts will be noted in box 8 of your W-2 and must be settled when filing your annual return.

January 15 - Fourth Quarter Estimated Tax Payment

This marks the deadline for the fourth quarter estimated tax payment for the 2025 tax year. Missed payments mean filing your 2025 return and settling all dues by February 2, 2026, to avoid penalties.

Considerations for Weekends and Holidays:

Should a due date fall on a weekend or legal holiday, deadlines extend to the following business day.
